Joost

Origin: Britsum, Netherlands
Genre / Subgenres: Rap / Experimental hip-hop, Electronic, Gabber

I don't know what I expected when I saw a Dutchman named Joost was on the lineup, but I can assure you it wasn't that. I'm not even really sure how I feel about it all right now, but I think it's good? The best way I can describe what I just went through is that I was handed a stick of lit dynamite, and I had no choice but to stand there until it blew up in my face. Turns out the multidisciplinary artist grew a cult following online before going all in on music. On YouTube, he was known for posting absurdist sketches, mini-documentaries, and surreal comedy videos. So the soundscape he creates makes perfect sense.

"Chaotic" is just the tip of the iceberg with this guy, and pinning him down to one genre is a challenge in itself. Foundationally, there's a lot of hip-hop, but sonically, EDM nano-genres are felt throughout. Yes, he has a vast sense of humor, but he can flip it right over and express grief, self-reflection, and vulnerability. Bonus points to this guy for having a song titled "Coachella".

Performing: Friday

Origin: Osaka, Japan
Genre / Subgenres: Electronic / Techno, Trance

Yousuke is a unique case to rate because he has no singles, EPs, or LPs to his name. His reasoning for not having authorship to any original music is that he views "DJing itself as the art form." So the only thing I can grade him on is his live sets, which have become what he's most widely known for anyway. Especially his Tokyo Boiler Room set, which was released for the world to enjoy just a year ago. It went viral, and he's since become your favorite DJ's favorite DJ.

Once Yousuke's shirt comes off, you know shit's about to go down, and it happens at every single one of his sets (another known characteristic of his). He has a gift on the decks that you don't see much of from other DJs these days: he's a very emotion-first selector and blends beauty into brutality to tell a story. No matter the genre, if it makes sense to him, he'll throw it in the mix. He's less about technical skills and more about what feels emotionally right. He is the epitome of "high risk, high reward," and the payout is worth millions.

Performing: Saturday
Stage Confirmation: Sahara
For Fans of: DJ Nobu, Lorenzo Senni, Eris Drew
Rating: ★★★★½ (I guess!)
Ratings are on a 5-star scale
