Iggy Pop

Origin: Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA 🇺🇸
Genre / Subgenres: Rock / Punk rock, Proto-punk, Hard rock

Iggy Pop is the American legacy act of this year's Coachella, and possibly of the 2020s. Starting as the lead singer of The Stooges, Iggy's been rocking the world for nearly 60 (yes, 60!) years and counting. Though initially seen as a failure when they debuted, Iggy and The Stooges weren't globally recognized as foundational figures in punk rock, hardcore, and alternative rock until much later. It took a decade and Iggy's leaving the band for critics and fans to finally appreciate what the band had given the world in the late '70s. When Iggy went solo, his career received a major revival thanks in part to a collaboration with David Bowie, who also co-produced some of his albums.

Iggy Pop eventually became known as "The Godfather of Punk", and he claimed this title due to everyone in the genre heavily borrowing from his attitude, sound, and being unconventional. Stylistically, and over time, he's become diverse. Dabbling in proto-punk, art rock, and industrial, but never straying away from his grassroots. He's always been defined by danger, physicality, and immediacy, which makes him an exciting act to watch, though now that he's pushing 80, I'm not sure how he moves today. All that matters is that he still turns the dials up to 11, keeps his aim direct, and never wears a shirt. There is literally no punk music without Iggy Pop.

Performing: Sunday
Stage Prediction: Mojave
For Fans of: The Stooges, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie
Rating: ★★★½

Los Hermanos Flores

Origin: San Vicente, El Salvador 🇸🇻
Genre / Subgenres: Latin / Cumbia, Tropical orquestra, Central American traditional

Los Hermanos Flores is the overall legacy act of Coachella this year, and has a rich history that goes back 64 years(!), making them the legacy of the entire weekend. Not only that, but they're also known as the most iconic and influential cumbia orchestra in El Salvador's history. So Coachella booking them is actually a much bigger deal than most people realize. They're the first Salvadoran and Central American orchestra to ever perform at the festival. Founded in 1962, Don Andrés Rodríguez formed this band with his children, eventually forming a 10-sibling(!) orchestra.

Their hits became radio staples across Central America and Mexico, catapulting them to international recognition. Since then, they've released almost 40 albums(!), completed over 200 tours(!), and have been labeled a cultural institution of El Salvador. Their music is upbeat, fun, and full of cultural pride, the latter of which is generally the main focus. There's also a strong emphasis on nostalgia, and when they perform, it's nothing but a long set of seamless hits. Especially the biggest crowd pleaser, "La Bala." Their shows often turn into multi-generational dance parties and are nothing but one huge celebration for anyone and everyone who's down with the culture.

Performing: Saturday

Key Tracks: La Bala / Enfermera / El Ausente
Rating: ★★★½
