The Chats

Origin: Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia
Genre / Subgenres: Rock / Punk rock, Hardcore punk, Garage punk

From the research that I've done, The Chats make music that's "Australian as hell," and I've never been, but I kind of get that. They quite possibly make the most in-your-face music I've listened to (so far) in the best way possible. Intentionally obnoxious, yet one hundred percent authentic, Eamon Sanwith's flat vocals about boredom and pub culture are shouted at you over buzzsaw guitars and drums that sound like a caveman is playing them. Again, these are all compliments, and it's a thrill to get lost in, even if it's just for 10 minutes.

Performing: Sunday
Stage Prediction: Sonora
For Fans of: Amyl and the Sniffers, Cosmic Psychos, Viagra Boys
Key Tracks: Smoko / 6L GTR / Identity Theft
Rating: ★★★★

Taemin

Origin: Seoul, South Korea
Genre / Subgenres: Pop / K-pop, Alternative R&B,

Royel Otis sounds like a cool band name, but it's simply the duo's first names put together, Royel and Otis. After a string of well-received EPs, a breakthrough single ("Oysters In My Pocket"), and viral covers of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Murder on the Dancefloor" and The Cranberries' "Linger", the Australian pair have risen to prominence. They're as indie as they could get by blending multiple flavors into one. Listen closely, and you'll get notes of indie pop, indie rock, new wave, pop rock, post-punk, and psychedelic. It's often cheerful and melodic, and it feels like it could've been released 25 years ago.

Performing: Saturday
Stage Prediction: Sahara
For Fans of: Jonghyun, Kai, The Weeknd
Key Tracks: Move / Criminal / Advice
Rating: ★★★★
Ratings are on a 5-star scale
