Moby

Origin: New York, New York, USA
Genre / Subgenres: Electronic / Electronica, Downtempo, Ambient

You can't talk about electronic music without mentioning Moby, but his musical journey actually started in the New York underground scene, where he played in hardcore and punk bands before discovering his passion for EDM. His music was spun in clubs throughout Europe and the US in the '90s, but he became a household name when every track on his 1999 album, Play, was licensed for all media. Something that had essentially never been done before. What sets Moby apart from other DJs is his way of making emotion-driven electronic music that has a sense of introspection. EDM doesn't always have to be flashy and bass-heavy. It can be the polar opposite and still sound incredible.

Performing: Friday
Stage Prediction: Mojave
For Fans of: Massive Attack, Air, Thievery Corporation
Rating: ★★★★

The Rapture

Origin: New York, New York, USA
Genre / Subgenres: Rock / Dance-punk, Post-punk revival, Art punk

The Rapture emerged at a pivotal time in the New York City music scene, just as the underground scene was colliding with dance music and art-school experimentation. They became one of the defining bands of the dance-punk/post-punk revival movement alongside colleagues such as LCD Soundsystem and Franz Ferdinand. Thumping basslines, sharp guitars, and lots and lots of cowbell make up their sound, and the energy is upheld with every track played. You'll feel like you've been transported to a sweaty city basement, and all you can do is shout out the lyrics with everyone else. Bonus points for The Rapture because "Echoes" was the theme song for Misfits and was also used in Superbad, which I just watched yesterday. Both are incredible pieces of work.

Performing: Sunday
Stage Prediction: Gobi
For Fans of: LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Hot Chip
Rating: ★★★★

Ratings are on a 5-star scale
