Hot Mulligan

Origin: Lansing, Michigan, USA 🇺🇸
Genre / Subgenres: Rock / Pop punk, Emo, Midwest emo

Another emo revival band on the lineup? Sign me up. I'm sensing a pattern of nostalgia in the back half of this discovery challenge, and I'm all for it. The loud and messy Michigan band had to earn its fanbase the hard way: organically and through word of mouth. Non-stop touring in DIY venues and relying on other pop-punk circles to spread the word was the only way they'd get to where they are now, and it's clearly worked out. They're rough around the edges with no sign of sanding them down. They also have a sense of self-awareness and self-loathing that's masked with a sincere sense of humor. What I find admirable is the band's dual-vocalist approach. Tade and Chris go toe-to-toe, with complementary vocal textures and melodies, to form a well-balanced harmony that gives us listeners a great listening experience.

Performing: Friday
Stage Prediction: Sonora*
For Fans of: The Wonder Years, Origami Angel, Spanish Love Songs
Rating: ★★★★

WHATMORE

Origin: New York, New York, USA 🇺🇸
Genre / Subgenres: Rap / Alternative hip-hop, Indie rap, Hip-hop collective

The days of BROCKHAMPTON may be behind us, but here comes WHATMORE, a new collective that's here to fill that void the former boy band left in our hearts, and their timing couldn't be more perfect. This New York City supergroup was formed in 2024 after attending the same high school, and each of the five members carries their own weight and contributes equally to vocals and creative ideas.

By flipping popular indie and pop songs and sampling them, their music spread like wildfire on Instagram and TikTok, and they became the "IYKYK" group of the city. Chicken shops and diners became normal venues for their pop-up shows, making them easily accessible to their loyal fanbase. Their music is definitely on the laid-back side, but they have their explosive moments, which is where they shine the brightest. It's refreshing to see a group in hip-hop emphasize how vital their friendship is to them through lyricism.

Performing: Saturday
Stage Prediction: Sahara
For Fans of: BROCKHAMPTON, Laundry Day, Paris Texas
Rating: ★★★★½
Ratings are on a 5-star scale
