Subtronics

Origin: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA 🇺🇸
Genre / Subgenres: Electronic / Dubstep, Riddim, Tearout

"This one will fuck you up," as said on the titular "F**k Up", but that phrase should be applied to all of Subtronics' songs. His music feels as if you sat directly in front of a speaker the size of a refrigerator while sitting on a chair made of subwoofers. You know that opening scene in Back to the Future when Marty McFly plugs his guitar into that giant-ass amp in Doc's garage, and he's literally blown away after one strum? Subtronics is like that. Or that Maxell audio cassette ad from 1979 of that guy in a suit and shades, sitting in a chair, in front of a speaker, and his hair and tie are flying back? Subtronics is like that. What I'm saying is, Subtronics and iconography go hand in hand.

He's become one of the most influential DJs in modern bass music and pushes dubstep into wild territories that others may be too afraid to explore. Though his sound can be brutal and aggressive, it has personality and even humor (listen for the random sound bytes in his tracks). It's commendable that he can combine metallic screeches, power tools, glitches, laser zaps, and growls and turn that into music that's fun to wild out to.

Performing: Sunday
Stage Prediction: Sahara
For Fans of: Excision, Liquid Stranger, Virtual Riot
Rating: ★★★★

KETTAMA

Origin: Galway, Ireland 🇮🇪
Genre / Subgenres: Electronic / Techno, Hardcore continuum, Breakbeat

'90s UK rave and trance never really left. KETTAMA's just been hiding and gatekeeping it from us for a decade, but he's finally coming out of the shadows, tatted up like a Chipotle bag (complimentary). He makes no-nonsense dance music, which is what keeps him booked and busy at major European music festivals and clubs all over the continent. Experiencing a KETTAMA set will not only have your energy at an all-time high, but by the time it's over, you'll be drenched in sweat and physically exhausted (again, complimentary). His main focus is on you. If you're not moving and having a good time, then he's not doing his job right. And trust me, he's very good at his job.

Performing: Friday
Stage Prediction: Yuma*
For Fans of: Tommy Holohan, Overmono, Special Request
Rating: ★★★★

*Yuma lineup now available via Coachella's social media accounts
Ratings are on a 5-star scale
