Sahar Z

Origin: Tel Aviv, Israel 🇮🇱
Genre / Subgenres: Electronic / Progressive house, Melodic techno, Tech house

Don't be fooled by the placement of Sahar Z's name on the lineup poster. Much like TOMORA, he's been making noise for a while, as far back as the mid-90s in the underground electronic scene after completing military service. He has become a key cultural figure in Tel Aviv. He built his reputation by performing marathon DJ sets in his home country, which include many of his own 10+ minute tracks. His 2014 album, Time, was a turning point in his career and a big deal in the melodic and progressive house scene at the time.

The sounds he puts out are often dark, slow-burning, and emotionally restrained, which is a home run for some, but I'll admit that it didn't resonate as much for me. At times, I couldn't even tell whether I was listening to the same song or a new one because they all started to sound the same. His ability to shift his sound based on the mood of the crowd is impeccable, though, and he doesn't force climaxes as many modern DJs do. If you need to chill the hell out, you know who to see.

Nine Inch Noize

Origin: Cleveland, Ohio, USA 🇺🇸 / Hamburg, Germany 🇩🇪
Genre / Subgenres: Rock & Electronic / Industrial techno, Electro-industrial

It's unfair to judge Nine Inch Noize on the few collaborations they currently have, so I'll mostly discuss Nine Inch Nails since I already shared my thoughts on Boys Noize here. Nine Inch Nails has become well-regarded as one of, if not the biggest, industrial rock bands of all time. Active since the '80s, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross emerged at the perfect time, just as grunge was having its major surge. What made them stand out from their peers was their ability to blend aggressive industrial sounds with emotionally raw lyrics about pain, anger, obsession, isolation, and self-reflection.

Fast forward a few decades, and the duo decided to explore film scoring and found major success, having won two of three Oscar nominations and counting (The Social Network and Soul, then absolutely ROBBED a nomination for Challengers). Now, they're branching out even further and exploring a deeper, collaborative effort with EDM phenom, Boys Noize, in an effort to evolve after bringing him on tour last year. From clips posted online, it all sounds magnificent, so a live debut as an official trio at Coachella is going to be a spectacle that cannot be missed.

Performing: Friday
Stage Prediction: Sahara
